court ruling

In 1994, parents, school boards, and students from five low income counties filed a law suit against the state of North Carolina. The complaint was against the state for not providing an equal opportunity of education for children in those counties. The ruling of the court stated that the state of North Carolina has fail to provide the children in those counties an equal opportunity education. Personally, I love the fact that there are people who care about the education of all children and not just the wealthy ones. I believe that the courts ruling made the state more responsible for the education of those children in those counties. As far as social issue, children from those counties will have an opportunity to a good education. That good education can open doors for jobs in the future. It is just like a domino affect. A person get a good education and then gets a good job. The job keeps them from being tempted to commit crime and being on the streets. That's when the communities become better. The first domino is the foundation that a good quality education has laid for that person to build their life on.

  1. It is a domino effect, I think it's really important to make sure the dominoes are falling the right way. It's sad to think that just because a child lives in a poor area they wouldn't get the good education to open the doors for a good job in the future. Then the community becomes worse instead of better.

  2. I am a Native American (Lumbee) and I was born and raised in Robeson County. I still live here. The thing that really gets to me is that we have many Native Americans who worked many long, sweaty days in the tobacco field when they were young, born and raised with 7-10 siblings in a 3 bedroom house, one car, no tv, and lacking many other things that they are so fortunate to have these days. However, because of an oppurtunity called "education" they were able to beat the odds. They were able to succeed and become doctors, lawyers, teachers, politicians, among other great professions. However, they refuse to lift a hand and stand up for what's right in our education system. They refuse to volunteer, donate to schools, or show up at PTA meetings. Furthermore, some help allocate monies that should go to the schools elsewhere. It is a shame that they can't help pave the way for someone else who just needs a door opened for them.

  3. I referred to Native Americans because I am one and I didn't want to offend one. I also made my comment because I personally know so many in my own community; as well as relatives who are guilty of my statements.
