NCLB

Dear President Obama,

I am writing you concerning the policy of the No Child Left Behind. Although their may be some good intention to better our children education, I believe there are some things that should be changed in the NCLB law.

The first thing that should be change is the testing in our schools. Many of our teachers are instructed to put aside certain subject in order to prepare students for testing. Not only do this put presure on the teachers but the students also. It is hard for our children to learn under such presure and high expectation. The second thing that should be change is the govermnet control over the classroom. I believe that teachers should have more say in the classroom because they work with their students everyday and know their learning styles. With this control, teachers can make sure that their students are getting the education that they need. Finally, I think that the punishment of the schools should change. I think that the goverment should help the schools to be successful instead of punishing them. Not only will this affect the students, but this will also affect the teachers self=esteem when it comes to teaching. Besides, you may end up closing a school that can really make a change in the community where it is located.

There may be some good in the NCLB law. I think that the bad out weighs the good. There should be another way that the goverment can help our schools without putting pressure on our students and teachers.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and taking my concerns into consideration.

situation

I am teaching a first grade class in a school where over the majority of the students come from low income families. I over heard a white student call a black student a nigger. This word is offensive to African American because of the way they were treated during slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. I would handle it by letting the student know that we do not use that tpye of word in our school and it is not nice to say that. I will talk to the parents to let them know what they child had said hoping that they will back me up. I do not think I would react differently because I know that some things children say or do they are just repeating what they heard or saw someone else did. Most of the time they do not know better.

I will feel uncomfortable during the hoildays when children want to talk about certain things about the holiday ,such as Christmas, and one of the students family do not celebrate that particular holiday. I will try to make a lesson that it will not be offensive to anyone in the classroom and I just want say the word Christmas. I beileve that I am responsible for making sure that the student is not offended and feel safe in the classroom inspite of their background.

goals

The goals for school survey is nothing like when I was going to school. Most of the teachers that I had when I was in school had the attitude like if you get you do if you do not get it tough luck. I never even seen anything about diverse culture accept for black history month. I do not believe that the schools that I went to were examples of what schools should be. Don't get me wrong, there were teachers who really cared and there were some who really did not care at all. At one point of time that affected me in a negative way because I was tagged with names. As I grew older, I shook that off from me.

I have little knowledge of charter and home school. Last year my son got into some trouble and had to go to a charter school for the rest of that year. I think it is a good thing to have to keep children in school and make sure that they have options to get their education. Home school could be a bad thing and a good one. The child will get one on one attention but they will not experience being social.

When I become a teacher, I will make sure that I will do what it takes to educate my students. I have already started preparing myself by continuing my education. I will try my best to make sure that every student is appreciated for their own uniqueness. I will also have different approaches to teach them so I will be able to accommodate every child learning style.
